Course 1: Getting Started as an ICF Coach

Part 1: Coaching Ethically and Professionally

This part of the course introduces the ICF ethical guidelines that ICF coaches must follow. The ICF Code of Ethics is discussed in-depth and paired with real-world examples and practical exercises. Coaching as a profession is compared with other professions and practices, such as mentoring and therapy.

The coaching professional standard is modeled by instructors and practiced by students. Setting boundaries within the coaching relationship are introduced and practiced so the student has practical experience referring clients to other professionals when needed.

Part 2: The coaching mindset

This part of the course introduces the coaching mindset as a set of attitudes held in high regard as a coach. The coaching mindset is a process of engaging, acknowledging, and developing as a coach. It’s a framework that guides our actions and our practice. It is meant to act as a foundation for coaching in the context of the practice of coaching and the attitudes held by the coach.

Part 3: Coaching Relationships and Agreement

This part of the course teaches students how to effectively establish an agreement between the coach and coachee. Students learn the contents of a coaching agreement including, terms, responsibilities of both parties, and any applicable fees or employer requirements.

It also covers the structure and flow of the first enrollment call with a coachee and the first coaching session. Students gain practical experience practicing establishing the coaching agreement, completing an enrollment call, and the first coaching session.

Part 4: Designing the Alliance

This part of the course teaches students to practice and model mindful behaviors to develop a safe and non-judgmental space for the coachee. The roles of a coach are discussed in depth.
